It happens; people accidentally drop things into the sea or on a dive.
If you’ve ever lost something in the water and wanted to go find it, then the Search and Recovery Diver Specialty course is for you. You will learn effective ways to search for objects underwater that increase your chances of success.
You will have a chance to use differnent methods to bring up small, large or just awkward items from the seabed.
The Search and Recovery course can be challenging, but it is definetely a lot of fun.
Academic
Gathering information and resources, then carefully planning a search are the first important steps you learn. During four scuba dives you’ll practice:
- Swimming search patterns using your compass and natural navigation.
- Locating large and small objects using various search patterns.
- Using a lift bag for large or heavy objects, plus other recovery methods.
- Planning a search operation based on facts gathered about a lost object prior to the dive.
Equipment
Besides your basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a compass and underwater slate. Other gear that may help with your searches and bringing up the recovered items, are a good dive light, marker buoys, a lift bag, rope and a dive reel. Your dSMB reel should work perfectly.
The course involves a couple of hours of theory at the shop, plus 4 dives usually over 2 days. An optional pool session can be arrange if required for practise.

- Compass use and search patterns
- Using a lift Bag and tying knots underwater
- Dive safety procedures when using a lift bags
Cost: $399 | 1/2 day Theory | 4 Open Water Shore Dives over 2 days
Cost includes all online training materials, certification and study materials. Any specialist equipment will be provided for the duration of the course.
